New Netflix Show ‘Girlboss’ Is Nailing It

Sophia seems like a lost teen who has no idea what she’s doing. She’s working in a store with no respect for her supervisor and she doesn’t care much about the job to begin with. It’s not long before she’s fired. So, takes off and buys a jacket. Then, she steals a rug and has a squat at the park.

That’s right! That’s how the show starts. Really kind of random right? But, it catches your interest. Knowing that the real Sophia is a businesswoman who once owned and was the CEO of Nasty Gal, a company that was doing almost $100 million in sales at one point. Actually, there are different reports about how much it was making at its highest point. But, it doesn’t matter. Nasty Gal climbed pretty high and what’s awesome is the unorthodox way in which it was done. Forget all the negative press about the company now. Of course, they made mistakes.

The question is how did Sophia go from a lost young twenty-something to the CEO of a multi-million dollar company? You have to admit, you want to know. Trust me, you won’t be let down. It’s not a show about the business really. It’s hard to explain. It is about the business, but it’s more about Sophia.

It’s comedy wrapped around drama and it fills a void. The show is for real. It comes at you and it finds interesting ways to tell the story without rushing. How did she meet her best friend? That’s an episode of really cool flashbacks.

How did she lose her business on Ebay? They bring an online forum to life with a round table and the chat of several members sitting behind their nameplates. The jealousy is hilarious and how they plot against her is outrageous. She wakes up one morning to find her account suspended. Does that stop her? No! Nothing is stopping this girl who found a way to do what she absolutely loved doing because she hated doing everything else.

I give the writers an A+! It’s writing like the following scene that makes the show so intelligently humorous and captivating:

When Annie is offered a promotion and she’s deciding whether or not to take it:
Annie’s Boss – “This is your Sliding Doors moment.”
Annie – “I never saw Sliding Doors. I bought a ticket. But, didn’t go. I wonder how my life would have turned out if I had gone.”

And Scenes Like These

Of course, the internet’s full of articles about how unfortunate it is for the show and the feminist movement that Donald Trump is in office and that the business just filed for bankruptcy. That’s pretty much the buzz and many people seem to agree on that angle. I’m not going to go into all that because I watched the show for the entertainment value and the fact that Sophia comes across as a brat doesn’t turn me off at all. She fights for what she wants. If you want to know how the show affects the feminist movement or what they think about it, there are more than enough gossip rags highlighting those things.

It’s best to go through life not putting people into categories. You don’t cloud your brain with expectations and you can see people for who they really are. Despite her temper tantrums, you’ll love her attitude. The way she looks at life and how she gets things done will grow on you. All of this wrapped up in a funny and entertaining show with moments of ‘real’ splashed entirely through it. Imagine that!
